Apollonius of Rhodes

A resident of Alexandria, Apollonius was, unlike his poetic teacher Callimachus, greatly influenced by the Homeric epic form. Ancient sources record that the first draft of the Argonautica was met with derision when performed in his hometown. Apollonius rewrote it; the new version played so well in Rhodes that the poet is still known by the name of the city.
