Barbara Lazear Ascher

Born in Christiansburg, Virginia, in 1946, Barbara Lazear Ascher worked as a lawyer for two years before turning her attention to writing full-time. She has published two essay collections, Playing After Dark and The Habit of Loving, as well as the nonfiction books Landscape without Gravity: A Memoir of Grief, about her brother’s death at the age of thirty-one from AIDS, and Dancing in the Dark: Romance, Yearning, and the Search for the Sublime.
