Marguerite de Navarre

(1492 - 1549)

Born near Angoulême in 1492, the sister of King Francis I and wife of Henry II of Navarre, Marguerite de Navarre became a leading figure of the French Renaissance, supporting artists, humanists, and church reformers. Intending to create a French Decameron, de Navarre began to write the Heptameron, a series of tales told by travelers delayed by a flood. She died before she could finish it, leaving the tales for her editor to compile in a posthumous edition.
