Dock Ellis

(1945 - 2008)

As a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Dock Ellis deliberately hit three batters in a row at the beginning of one game to boost his team’s morale. He played eleven years in the Major Leagues, beginning and ending his career with the Pirates, with stints in between on the Yankees, A’s, Rangers, and Mets. Best remembered for pitching a no-hitter while on LSD in 1970, Ellis operated a drug-counseling center in his native Los Angeles after retiring in 1979.
