Ruth First

(1925 - 1982)

Ruth First worked as an opponent of the apartheid South African government, and she was jailed in 1963. While in prison, she attempted suicide; once free, she left for London, where she wrote her prison memoir, 117 Days. First was killed in Mozambique by a bomb mailed by agents of the South African Police.
