Elizabeth Hawes

(1903 - 1971)

In 1940 the FBI began an investigation into the designer and writer Elizabeth Hawes. Four years later she moved to Detroit to work as an organizer for the United Auto Workers. Hawes relaunched her fashion house in New York City in 1948 but closed it a year later and moved to the Virgin Islands.
