James Laver

(1889 - 1975)

Born in Liverpool in 1899, James Laver worked from 1922 to 1959 as a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where one of his jobs was to date pictures based on details of costume. The work led Laver to develop his precise timeline of fashion cycles, which became popularly known as Laver’s Law.
