English economist and demographer Thomas Malthus.

Thomas Malthus

(1766 - 1834)

A critic of population growth writing in an era when most other economists supported human expansion, Thomas Malthus was read and admired by later thinkers such as Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. His Malthusian catastrophe, an idea positing that famine and disaster follow mass population growth, remains debated by economists today.
