After Irène Némirovsky died in Auschwitz, her daughter Denise retained a suitcase containing papers that she believed to be her mother’s diary. Summoning the courage to read them over fifty years later, she discovered an unfinished novel, published in 2004 as Suite Française, winner of that year’s Prix Renaudot.
