(1811 - 1896)

Harriet Beecher Stowe grew up in a prominent Connecticut family, the daughter of a Calvinist preacher. The success of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published in 1852 and selling 300,000 copies in its first year, established Stowe as the best known American female writer of the nineteenth century.
