Deb Olin Unferth

At the age of eighteen in 1987, Deb Olin Unferth and her Christian boyfriend traveled throughout Central America looking for “revolution jobs,” spending the most time in Nicaragua, where eight years prior the Sandinistas had ended the forty-four-year dictatorship of the Somoza family. Of her status as an Internacionalista, Unferth wrote, “I believe the Nicaraguans called us Sandalistas behind our backs.” She is also the author of a novel, Vacation, and a short-story collection, Minor Robberies.
