Italo Calvino

(1923 - 1985)

After fighting as a member of the Italian Resistance at the end of World War II, Italo Calvino completed a thesis on Joseph Conrad and graduated from the University of Turin in 1947. That same year, his first novel, The Path to the Nest of Spiders, was printed by the Giulio Einaudi publishing house, where he also found a position in the publicity department. He published his novels The Baron in the Trees in 1957 and Invisible Cities in 1972. Calvino was an editor at Giulio Einaudi until 1984, one year before he died at the age of sixty-one.
