Pieter van Musschenbroek

(1692 - 1761)

The son of an instrument maker who built vacuum pumps, microscopes, and telescopes, Pieter van Musschenbroek attended lectures by Isaac Newton. After Newton’s death, the term physics came to replace natural philosophy; Musschenbroek may have coined the new term in his 1737 book Essay on Physics.
