Charles Brockden Brown

Born in Philadelphia to Quaker parents, Charles Brockden Brown was a prolific writer and self-described “storytelling moralist”; his first book, Wieland, is considered the first American Gothic novel. He died at the age of thirty-nine of tuberculosis.
