Will Durant

(1885 - 1981)

Will Durant married Ida Kaufman, one of his students at the Ferrer Modern School in New York City, in 1913; Durant called her Ariel, and she later adopted that name legally. In 1927 they began writing the eleven-volume Story of Civilization; Ariel was not formally credited as Durant’s collaborator until 1961. Rousseau and Revolution, the tenth volume, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1968.
