Johann Winckelmann

(1717 - 1768)

The son of a Prussian cobbler, Johann Winckelmann was a pioneer of art history and archaeology, as well as the founding father of German classicism. In 1768, thirteen years after the publication of Reflections, Winckelmann was murdered in a hotel room in Trieste.
