Scholastique Mukasonga
Born in 1956 to a Tutsi family in Rwanda, Scholastique Mukasonga trained as a social worker and moved to France in early 1992. She lost more than thirty members of her family in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, including her mother. In 2006, at fifty years old, Mukasonga published her first book, a memoir. Six years later came Our Lady of the Nile, her first novel, set in the years leading up to the genocide at a girls’ school.
