Caroline Henderson

(1877 - 1966)

After studying literature at Mount Holyoke College, Caroline Henderson bought a farm in the Oklahoma Panhandle. From 1931 to 1937, she wrote a series of articles for The Atlantic Monthly detailing the plight of Great Plains farmers during the dust bowl era. “We long for the garden and little chickens, the trees and birds and wildflowers of the years gone by,” Henderson wrote after having to leave her home. “Perhaps if we do our part, these good things may return someday, for others if not for ourselves.”
