Aelfric

(c. 955 - c. 1010)

Born in the middle of the tenth century, likely in Wessex, Aelfric joined the school of the bishop Aethelwold at Winchester around 970. He later taught Benedictine monks at the abbey of Cerne and became a prolific writer of Old English texts—including a Latin grammar—earning the nickname Grammaticus.
