Alice Walker

The daughter of sharecroppers, Alice Walker enrolled in Spelman College in 1961 on a scholarship and later transferred to Sarah Lawrence. After graduating she became active in the civil rights movement and registered Black voters in Liberty County, Georgia. Her third novel, The Color Purple, made her the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
