Roger Bannister

(1929 - 2018)

While a student at Oxford University and St. Mary’s Hospital, Roger Bannister broke the nine-year-old world record for the mile by almost two seconds, the first person to cross the line under four minutes. He earned his medical degree in 1963, became a practicing neurologist—publishing papers on the physiology of exercise and heat illness—and was knighted in 1975.
