Richard Ford

The Southern-born Richard Ford turned to fiction writing after an underwhelming stint as a law student. Independence Day, the second novel in the Frank Bascombe trilogy, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1995. “Writing is the only thing I’ve done with persistence, except for being married,” Ford once said, “and yet it’s such an inessential thing.”
