George Gallup

(1901 - 1984)

After completing a PhD in journalism at the University of Iowa, George Gallup moved to New York City in 1932 to conduct public-opinion research for the advertising agency Young & Rubicam. Three years later he founded the American Institute of Public Opinion. Gallup helped bring public-opinion polling to national attention by accurately forecasting Franklin D. Roosevelt’s victory over Alfred M. Landon in the 1936 U.S. presidential election.
