Abdulrazak Gurnah

In 1968, at the age of twenty, Abdulrazak Gurnah left Zanzibar to study in Great Britain. An English professor at the University of Kent, he has written numerous novels, many about the experience of being an immigrant in Britain. “I find myself thinking about this idea of being from another place and living somewhere else now,” he once said in an interview. “Imaginatively you’re divided, spatially you’re divided, which doesn’t mean it’s a tragedy, but it has many problems, intellectual as well as physical.” He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2021.
