James Howell

(c. 1594 - 1666)

A Royalist spy, James Howell was imprisoned at the start of the English Civil War in 1642 and passed the time during his eight-year sentence writing letters and pamphlets. Howell was released in 1650; after the restoration of the monarchy, he was named historiographer royal.
