Adam Levin

(1969 - 2019)

A South African fashion journalist, Adam Levin published The Wonder Safaris, a collection of travelogues based on his journey through twenty African countries, in 2003. He followed it two years later with The Art of African Shopping, a chronicle of his life as a trader of handmade African crafts. Aidsafari: A Memoir of My Journey with AIDS, his third book, was awarded the Alan Paton Award in 2006. “There is a weird kind of heroism attached to it on some subconscious level in the gay scene and it’s very dangerous,” he said of being HIV positive. “There is nothing glamorous about it, it’s fucking horrible.” Levin died at the age of fifty in 2019.
