Lewis Thomas

(1913 - 1993)

As a medical student at Harvard University in the 1930s, Lewis Thomas supported himself by donating blood and publishing poems. After serving as dean of both the New York University School of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine, he was president of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His 1974 book The Lives of a Cell won a National Book Award.
