Rafael Marques

Born in Angola, Rafael Marques studied abroad at the University of London and University of Cambridge before returning to report on his home country. In 2013 Marques was charged with defamation for publishing Blood Diamonds: Corruption and Torture in Angola. He was found guilty in 2015 and given a two-year suspended sentence. Then, in 2017, he was charged with “defamation of a public authority” and “outrage to a sovereign body”; he could serve three years if found guilty. “I will continue to write,” he said in 2015. “In Africa the good guys keep leaving so that the bad guys can rule as they wish.”
