Novalis

(1772 - 1801)

Novalis (né Friedrich von Hardenberg) studied law at the universities of Jena and Leipzig, where he met fellow Romantics Friedrich Schiller and Friedrich von Schlegel before becoming an auditor for the Saxon government in 1796. His poetic mysticism served as a source of inspiration for the surrealist artists of the 1920s and 1930s.
