Luigi Pirandello

Luigi Pirandello

(1867 - 1936)

Having already written poetry and fiction for two decades, Luigi Pirandello in his fifties finally became famous when his first play debuted in Paris in 1923. His emphasis on ironic self-consciousness came to influence Jean-Paul Sartre and Samuel Beckett. Pirandello once wrote, “My art is full of bitter compassion for all those who deceive themselves.”
