Hilary Putnam

(1926 - 2016)

The renowned analytic philosopher Hilary Putnam was best known for defending realism—and his right to attack positions he previously held. “A philosopher’s job is not,” he wrote in defense of changing his opinion, “to become universally known as Mr. View X or Ms. View X.” Putnam served on the Harvard faculty from 1965 until his death.
