Arthur Quiller-Couch

(1863 - 1944)

Following the Balfour Act of 1902, Arthur Quiller-Couch joined the Cornwall Education Committee and helped expand secondary education in the region. Virginia Woolf quoted Quiller-Couch extensively in A Room of One’s Own, and in 1927 Hogarth Press, the publishing house she ran with her husband, Leonard, published Quiller-Couch’s A Lecture on Lectures, a critique of popular methods of rote learning.
