Ninth-century painting of Chinese poet Ruan Ji

Ruan Ji

(210 - 263)

Ruan Ji was one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, a collective of poets known for their rebellion against life under the Wei dynasty. They gathered in a bamboo grove to drink wine and write verse. According to one account, Ruan Ji was approached during this time with an advantageous marriage offer for his daughter, but he was too drunk to negotiate; after he remained drunk for sixty days, the suitors gave up and he rejoiced.
