James Wright

(1927 - 1980)

James Wright often used his experiences growing up in the Ohio River Valley as inspiration for his poems. He earned his MA in creative writing to "get it the hell out of the way” in 1954 and his PhD in English in 1959, titling his dissertation “The Comic Imagination of Charles Dickens.” Wright received a Pulitzer Prize for his Collected Poems in 1972.
