Agnes Strickland

(1796 - 1874)

The British historian Agnes Strickland became a student of the past early in life, reading Plutarch’s Lives as a child before going on to write biographies as an adult. She and her sister Elizabeth cowrote Lives of the Queens of England and works covering bishops and bachelor kings. Near the end of her life, Oxford students greeted her with the cry, “The queens! The queens! Three cheers for the queens!”
