Svetlana Alexievich

The Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich has made her career by interviewing Soviet citizens who were victims of war and calamity. “When I was in Afghanistan during the Soviet war,” she said upon receiving her Nobel Prize in Literature in 2015, “I heard how quickly man sheds culture, and a monster emerges. The beast is revealed.”
