An Chongbok was considered the first professional historian of the late Joseon period. His The Beginnings of the Three Kingdoms worked to assert the legitimacy of Korea’s rulers, while his son-in-law Kwon Ilsin became one of the thousands of Koreans who converted to Catholicism in the late eighteenth century.
