Notorious for physically and sexually abusing prostitutes in his chateau in Lacoste, the Marquis de Sade was incarcerated in various prisons and insane asylums. He occupied himself in captivity by writing novels, among them 120 Days of Sodom and Justine, addressed to the topics of rape, bestiality, and necrophilia.
