Before the American Revolution broke out in 1775, King George III’s reign was troubled at home by combative ministers. “My very sleep is not free from thinking of the men I daily see,” he wrote in 1765. “Excuse the incoherency of my letter, but a mind ulcered by the treatment it meets from all around is the true cause of it.”
