Shannon Gibney

A writer and professor of English at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Shannon Gibney was reprimanded and sent to sensitivity training in 2013 after a student complained about a class lecture she delivered on the subject of structural racism; it was the third time she had been investigated for discussing race in a classroom. “Why do we have to talk about this?” the student, who was white and male, asked. “I tried to explain,” Gibney later said, “that this is unfortunately the context of twenty-first-century America.”
