Ivan Goncharov

(1812 - 1891)

Published in 1859, Oblomov made Ivan Goncharov famous in Russia. Suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness, he once accused Ivan Turgenev of stealing his plots, growing to believe that the writer led a gang devoted to his ruin. He published another novel in 1869; it was poorly received, and he wrote nothing more.
