Jean Hatzfeld

Born in Madagascar in 1949 to Jewish parents who had fled the Nazi invasion of France, Jean Hatzfeld began writing in 1973 for the French newspaper Libération. In 1994 he traveled to Rwanda to report on the genocide of Tutsi by the Hutu majority, ultimately publishing three volumes of firsthand accounts: Machete Season, comprising interviews with Hutu killers; Life Laid Bare, a collection of Tutsi accounts of survival; and The Antelope’s Strategy, which follows members of both ethnic groups after Hutu perpetrators received presidential pardons in 2003.
