David Howarth

(1912 - 1991)

At the start of World War II, David Howarth became a war correspondent for BBC Radio; he joined the navy in 1940. He later received King Haakon VII Liberty Cross for his efforts during the German occupation of Norway. In 1951 Howarth published a book, The Shetland Bus, about his war experiences. It was an instant classic, and the book’s success led Howarth to become a self-taught historian. He went on to write books about the Norman Conquest, the Spanish Armada, Trafalgar, Waterloo, the Greek War of Independence, and the Normandy landings. Howarth’s autobiography, Pursued by a Bear, was published in 1986.
