Subcomandante Marcos

Born Rafael Sebastián Guillén Vicente, the leader of the Zapatista National Liberation Army has used several pseudonyms and in 2014 declared Subcomandante Marcos “no longer exists.” After the Zapatistas staged a rebellion in southeastern Mexico to demand indigenous rights and land reform, the federal government labeled Marcos a terrorist; more than 100,000 demonstrators marched in Mexico City in support of him.
