Pretty-shield

(1856 - 1944)

As a young girl digging for turnips with a sharp stick, Pretty-shield was charged by a buffalo. She dodged the animal but stabbed her right eye with the stake. After recovering from the wound, she became a medicine woman for the Crow Nation and, over the course of the next seventy years, witnessed the annihilation of both the buffalo and the American Indian way of life.
