Rose Macaulay

(1881 - 1958)

The prolific novelist and travel writer Rose Macaulay is best known for her last novel, The Towers of Trebizond, a partly autobiographical tale about adventurers making their way through Turkey. The book’s compelling first line is often quoted: “ ‘Take my camel, dear,’ said my Aunt Dot, as she climbed down from this animal on her return from High Mass.”
