Ihara Saikaku

(1642 - 1693)

Ihara Saikaku was famous for his composition of haikai, linked-verse poems from which the haiku was derived. He is best known, however, for his racy novels, which followed the romantic and financial affairs of the Japanese merchant class and demimonde.
