Georg Schweinfurth

(1836 - 1925)

The son of German fugitives from the Napoleonic Wars, Georg Schweinfurth was born in Latvia in 1836. From 1863 to 1866 he explored Egypt and the Sudan; upon his return to Berlin, he received a grant to undertake a botanical exploration of Central Africa.
