Victor Serge

(1890 - 1947)

Born to Russian parents in Belgium in 1890, Victor Serge was imprisoned for anarchist sympathies in France in 1912, took part in an uprising in Barcelona in 1917, and joined the Bolsheviks in 1919. He and his fellow revolutionaries, he later wrote, “unwittingly, with our own hands, constructed the most terrifying state machine conceivable, and when, with revulsion, we realized the truth, this machine, driven by our friends and comrades, turned on us and crushed us.” He died in Mexico City in 1947.
