Benjamin of Tudela

(c. 1120 - c. 1173)

Benjamin of Tudela was the first known European traveler to reach the frontiers of China. His journey allowed him to survey medieval Jewry. “In fact,” he wrote, “the Jews are dispersed over all countries, and whoever hinders Israel from being collected shall never see any good sign, and shall not live with Israel.”
